01 / OUR ROOTS

Born in the wetlands.
Carried by tradition.

In the pokhars of Darbhanga and Madhubani, makhana grows beneath giant floating leaves. These mineral-rich pond beds and warm monsoons are the heartland of a very special seed.

Hand-harvested, sun-dried and traditionally popped. This is the story of Mithila’s pearl.

03 / POND TO PALM

The journey
of a pearl.

Months of patient, skilled work by Mithila’s pond families. Every step matters, from the muddy pond bed to the first delicate crunch.

  1. 01Makhana pond with a purple Euryale ferox flower and prickly floating leaves

    Sown in the pokhar

Seeds rest on the muddy bed of shallow ponds; by spring, broad floating leaves cover the water.

  2. 02Mithila farmer gathering makhana seeds among pond leaves

    Dived & gathered

From August to October, skilled divers collect the fallen seeds from the pond floor by hand.

  3. 03Makhana seeds washed and sun-dried on a woven tray

    Washed & sun-dried

Seeds are cleaned, sieved and dried under the Bihar sun, then graded by size.

  4. 04Artisan roasting and popping makhana with a wooden mallet

    Roasted & popped

Roasted over wood fire and struck with a wooden mallet, the hard shell cracks and a white pearl pops out.

  5. 05Cupped hands offering white makhana

    To your hand

From a Darbhanga pond straight to your pantry—pure, light and crunchy.

The hands behind every harvest.

Makhana harvesting is an artisanal, labour-intensive craft carried by Mithila’s Mallah communities, who dive to the pond bed to gather seeds by hand.

By shortening supply chains and removing layered middlemen, NeerNut supports transparent pricing for pond-growers while delivering batch-tested, clean-label foxnuts to your door.
